Battle of the Hastings:
The Battle of the Hastings took place in the year AD 1066 after a dispute over the succession to the English throne. William of Normandy was the cousin of Edward the Confessor (King of England). Edward died in 1066 with no kids, so the throne was given to Harold Godwin. But William of Normandy claimed the throne before his death, and Edward had promised the throne to him. William therefore planned to assume his role as the king, while Harold thought he was getting the throne and had no intention of letting William claim the throne. But there was a problem, Harold Hardrada (Williams brother in law), King of Norway wanted the throne also, so he got ready for battle too.
On October 14th 1066, Hardrada set of to invade England William landed his 10,000 troops and started a battle with Harold (who only had 7000) without him not really knowing. The two Harolds battled it out, and Hardrada ended up dying. William's army then set up and battled fiercely the next day until Harold and the Saxon army were eventually cut down by Norman swords. It was thought that he lost because after battling Hardrada, Godwin matched his whole army to William (at the Hastings) and they fought straight away, meaning the knights must of been tired. He also didn't have as many troops as William because he lost some when battling Hardrada. he battle lasted for less then hours and William was crowned King of England, which people were not happy about.
